Restoran Yik Mun @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Restoran Yik Mun is one of those places that has made a name for itself in the Malaysian food scene. Having been around since the year 1926, this restaurant is so famous that it is most often filled with outsiders. Come weekends, it is so crowded that it is so difficult to get a place to sit. Their Hainanese food along with the Pau that is so famous has become so expensive nowadays so much so, you hardly get any locals visiting this restaurant.

Even when I was here this afternoon, it was so difficult to get a place and I had squeeze myself into a corner. Staffs were extremely busy but luckily they know me as the owners classmate and I do get some special attention that way. The place was buzzing with outsiders and bikers that commonly make a pit stop here. I have even seen people who travel all the way here just for the Pau and Chicken Chop for breakfast during the weekends and then return back to Kuala Lumpur after their meal. It may sound strange but it's a common sight here.

White Coffee @ RM 3.50
Their White Coffee is one of the hot selling items here and it's priced at a ridiculous RM 3.50 for a mug. Honestly, food isn't the same anymore and we locals know that. For example, those days the coffee was fixed upon order. Now, they have their own version of the 3 in 1 coffee and that is what is used. Similarly, then the Pau's were handmade. Now, they are all mass produced, kept frozen and steamed to order. Still, people who have never tasted what it used to be like before come in huge groups and the Pau's sells like hot cakes. Even this afternoon, by 3 pm, they were completely sold out and couldn't cope with the demand. Coming back to the coffee, price aside, I find it to be a tad too sweet. My rating for this shall be 7/10.

Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM 17.00
Those days, this was priced at less than RM 6.00 and over the years the price has been going consistently going up and now it is RM 17.00 . The set comes with a slice of Fried Chicken which is topped with tomato puree, peas and onions. And on the sides, you get a small piece of Man Tau Bun and some Mashed Potatoes.

Compared to last year, the portion has almost halved and that was truly shocking. Still, people are willing to pay the price for this. Of course, it does taste good but again, there has got to be some justification to it. This is a small town but these guys have become like a premium steak house. Another thing that I didn't like was the burnt Man Tau Bun. The colour of it would speak for itself. Otherwise, it was a good dish. The flavours were still authentic and it does taste good. My rating for this solely from the taste point of view would be 9/10.

Mashed Potatoes
Their Mashed Potatoes was another one that was really good. It is their proprietary recipe that is used in preparing this and over the years, despite it getting more expensive, the taste has been consistent. My rating for this shall be 8/10.

This place is one that needs no introduction so much so, Tanjung Malim has been put on the national food map solely because of this restaurant. Though we locals no longer patronise this restaurant due to the declining taste of their Pau's, still outsiders have been keeping them going and the support is overwhelming. Perhaps, they are still better than most Pau makers out there. For me, I would still come back for their Hainanese Chicken Chop which is one that is quite unique. Despite the rising prices and shrinking  portions, it is still something that I crave for every now and then. If you've never tried this, I would definitely recommend doing so.
